Going together to a jeweler or goldsmith to have your ring size measured professionally, or going to a jewelry store to try on rings is the safest method.

If you want it to be a surprise, then you need a caliper gauge like in the pictures below.

"Borrow" a ring from the person in question. If possible, they should wear it on the finger that the new ring is meant for. Please let us know if this is not possible.

Measure the inner diameter and width of the borrowed ring, as shown in the pictures below.
